Rhoda M. Haddock

Rhoda M.

Rhoda M. Haddock, 83, a 51-year resident of Oak Harbor, died peacefully at Careage of Whidbey in Coupeville on May 5, 2009.

Rhoda was born in Philadelphia, Penn., on Sept. 19, 1925, to Bernard and Bertha Friedman. During World War II, Rhoda left high school early and worked in the Philadelphia shipyard helping build and repair ships.

On March 30, 1948, Rhoda married William R. “Bill” Haddock. During their 54 years of marriage, Bill and Rhoda lived in Virginia, New Jersey, California and Alabama, traveling wherever the Navy would send them. They arrived in Oak Harbor in December 1957.

Rhoda worked as a home beautician in her early days. While in Oak Harbor, she worked many years at the Oak Harbor Pharmacy. She was involved in Navy Wives Club, Little League Baseball and Cub Scouts. Rhoda was also an avid bowler with Oak Harbor Women’s Bowling Association. Keeping up with her three boys was her main focus, and her greatest joys were with her family. As their three boys began to leave the nest, Bill and Rhoda took in adolescent foster children.

Rhoda was preceded in death by her husband Bill and son Bruce. Rhoda is survived by two sons, Mark (Debbie) of Olympia, and Dennis (Jan) of Burlington; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Other survivors include one brother, Norman (Rita) Friedman of Berlin, N.J.; one niece, Janet (Michael) Sussen of New Jersey; and one nephew, Brian (Marcy) Friedman of New Jersey.

A graveside service for family will be Friday, May 15, at Maple Leaf Cemetery. A memorial service will be held for family and friends at 1 p.m. May 15 at Burley Funeral Chapel in Oak Harbor.
