Robert Arthur Martin, age 91, died peacefully at his Coupeville home on Oct. 16, 2015. He was born on Sept. 29, 1924, at the family home built by parents Horace and Sara Martin in Van Nuys, Calif.
Bob grew up on this parcel of land next to the Los Angeles River, riding horses with his brother and earning the rank of Eagle Scout under the leadership of his dad.
During a political science class at Los Angeles City College, he met Vera Stuart. They married in 1947, and he began a long career with Farmers Insurance, which took him from Culver City to Merced to Santa Barbara, before his retirement on Whidbey Island in 1989. He was a civic-minded individual throughout his long life, serving his communities through the decades in numerous positions and on a variety of boards.
Bob loved Whidbey and the Puget Sound, happily exploring landscapes and towns with Vera until her death in 2002. He was an avid and frequently furious supporter of the Seattle Seahawks, and enjoyed a lifetime of relationships with a long line of pet dogs including his last, Cassie. He is survived by daughters Pamela Martin and Teresa Albert (Mark); son Douglas (Linda); grandchildren Alison, Martin, Stuart, Andrew, Sarah, Davina, James, Jennifer, Jessamine; and 16 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to WAIF, Whidbey Animals Improvement Foundation.
