Roby McGee went to be with the Lord on Oct. 11, 2011, at the age of 64. She died at home, with her husband and son at her side. She was born Oct. 6, 1947, in Minneapolis to Robert Edward and Pauline (Kennedy) Wilson. In 1956, she joined her big brother Greg, moving to Oak Harbor and attending school. Roby was a proud member of the outstanding graduating Class of 1965. Roby was the granddaughter of Dr. Henry Carskadden, pioneer Oak Harbor physician, and daughter of Polly Wilson who served as office nurse to Dr. Carskadden and Drs. Goetz and Bailey. She was married to Heinz “Dutch” Strehle in Oak Harbor on Dec. 9, 1989.
Following high school, Roby graduated from ITT Technical School, receiving her business degree. She worked for many years in the Information Technology Department at Whidbey General Hospital, where she also served as publisher of the hospital newspaper, The Monitor. She moved on the work as a secretary for the Koetje Agency and finally as office manager for Dutch Paints, a painting contractor company, owned by her husband “Dutch” Strehle.
Roby was a member of the Irish Wildlife Society, the Whidbey Island Genealogy Searchers (WIGS), the Oak Harbor Yacht Club and the Retried Greyhounds as Pets (REGAP) and was recognized as a Greyhound Lady. Roby was strong-willed, independent, thoughtful, caring and often quiet, with a very quick, but dry sense of humor. She was never afraid to speak her mind and what you saw was the real Roby McGee.
Roby is survived by her beloved husband “Dutch” of Oak Harbor; by three children, Erica Mills and husband Mark of Detroit, Mich., Dustin Latham of Seattle and Kevin Hanson and wife Heather of Long Island, N.Y.; one brother, Greg Wilson and wife Marlana of Mesa, Ariz.; and three grandchildren, Alison Converse and Cecily and Alexander Mills.
Graveside committal services for Roby will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Maple Leaf Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. with Rev. Jeff Spencer officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club.
