Ruth Ilene Horton passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 18 at Skagit Medical Hospital in Mount Vernon, Wash. Ruth was a resident of Oak Harbor since 1994. She was born in Wheatland, Wyo., on Aug. 25, 1933, to John and Edith (Campbell) Weber. She moved to Casper, Wyo., after she graduated from high school and attended cosmetology school. She married Theodore Cook in 1953 and gave birth to three children: David, Barbara and Judy. In 1962 the family moved to Lakewood, Calif., where she had several jobs before starting to work for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft/Boeing. She retired after 32 years. After many years alone and raising her three children, she married Nick Horton who captured her heart for 13 years before passing away in March 1990. In 1994, Ruth moved to Oak Harbor. to be close to her daughter, Barbara and Charles (Jeff) Cobb, who moved here in 1989 with the military.
Ruth enjoyed many passions as she entered her retirement years. She enjoyed making ceramic dolls and the time she spent with her friends who met to make dolls. She enjoyed sewing and making quilts. Ruth had many talents, she loved plants and making flower arrangements. She enjoyed the times she worked with Helping Hands at her church and the many friends she met who were near and dear to her heart during the time she lived here.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, John and Edith Weber; two brothers, Carl and Burrell Weber; sister, Frieda Heid; and her beloved husband, Nick Horton.
She is survived by her sister Mary Baker-Fowler and brother-in-law Jim of Wheatland, Wyo.; brother Newton Weber of Mills, Wyo.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Stella Pettaway of Stone Mountain, Ga.; as well as many nieces, nephews and spouses and their children. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother to her son David Lee and daughter-in-law Joyce, grandson Jason Cook and Kristen, great grandchildren, Courtney, Phoenix and Reagan of Norco, Calif.; her grand-daughter DeAnne Marie and Tommy Schlegel; great grandchildren, Kennedy, Paige and Ethan Schlegel of Anaheim, Calif.; daughter Barbara Jeane and son-in-law Charles (Jeffrey) Cobb; grand-daughter Natalie and (Christopher) Lemay; great-grandchildren Charlie, Scotty, Morgan and Shelby Lemay; grand-daughter Christine and Andrew Weible; great-grandchildren Samuel and Benjamin Weible; and daughter Judy Ann Lacey and Paulette Lacey. Family and friends are invited to memorial service that will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Grace Community Church in Oak Harbor.
