Thelma Marie McConchie

Thelma Marie McConchie was born in River Rogue, Mich., on March 12, 1924, to George and Stella Garland. She died August 28, 2007, at Harbor Care, Regency on Whidbey, Oak Harbor at the age of 83.

Thelma graduated from high school in Detroit. She was an avid roller skater and an excellent dance skater and instructed dance skating, achieving a Bronze Medal for figure skating. She met Albert McConchie, a young employee at the skating rink where he worked, and on Jan. 16, 1945, they were married.

Thelma and Al moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and on to San Bernardino, Calif. They remained in Southern California from 1948 to 1965. They then moved to the Orangevale area of Sacramento. Early this year, Thelma and Al moved to Oak Harbor to be near their son.

Thelma was the neighborhood nurse, confidant and financial advisor. She worked for a time as a financial consultant, selling stocks, bonds and insurance investments. She was a lady of many talents and she enjoyed crocheting and teaching others to crochet, doing upholstery, sewing and working with stained glass. For a time, she was a Tupperware distributor. She loved to dance and light up the room of any social event. She was a strong supporter of Al’s work.

Thelma is survived by her husband, Al, and one son Robert “Bob” McConchie, both of Oak Harbor, by two grandchildren, Brian and Leslie and two great grandchildren: Joseph and Harley.

Cremation was held, with private family burial to follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Park, Fair Oaks, Calif. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
