Thomas Pattenden

Graveside funeral services for Thomas L. Pattenden will be held Friday, April 2, at 10 a.m., at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Oak Harbor with Bishop Dorrell Quinton of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officiating.

Thomas Leslie Pattenden, 80, died March 23, 2004, at Whidbey Island Manor, Oak Harbor. He was born in Edmonton, England, July 29, 1923, to James and Winifred (Stephens) Pattenden.

Tom immigrated to the United States as a young man and began a career as a machinist. His work eventually took him to the aerospace industry, spending much of his life working in Southern California and Louisiana. While in Santa Monica, Calif., he met Catherine Smith. Tom and Catherine were married Dec. 26, 1953, in Yuma, Ariz.

Tom worked for HR Textron Corporation as a project engineer for the Controls Group, designing much of the propellant system for the space shuttle program. He was eventually transferred to the Boeing plant in Seattle. He retired in 1986. He and Catherine moved to Anacortes for a time and then settled in Oak Harbor.

Tom was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Oak Harbor and a life member of the Sons of Norway Lodge No. 2-029.

Tom is survived by three brothers, Eric, Brian and Peter Pattenden, all of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His wife Catherine preceded him in death.

Cremation was held. Arrangements by Burley Funeral Chapel.
