Wilbour G. Wood, 78, died peacefully in his sleep April 25, 2005, at his home in Oak Harbor. He was born August 20, 1926, in Long Beach, Calif., to Frank Wilbour and Grace Isabelle (Farrell) Wood. Wilbour was raised in Long Beach and Bakersfield, Calif.
During World War II, Wilbour served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He returned to California after the war and entered college, receiving his master’s degree in education. He began a lifetime career in education, serving as a teacher and football coach. In addition to his love of teaching and coaching his other passion was fly fishing. For the past 20 years, he had been a resident of Oak Harbor.
Survivors include three children and their spouses: Richard H. “Dick” Wood and wife Lori of Napa, Calif.; William G. “Bill” Wood and wife Leslie of Brookings, Ore., and Barbara Gliniak and husband Rick of Oak Harbor, and one brother, Don Wood of Fountain Valley, Calif. Eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Wilbour requested no formal funeral services. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow.
