Bill Schreiter was born April 22, 1925, in La Crosse, Wis., and died May 31, 2011, at Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville, at the age of 86. Bill and his wife, Pansy, retired to Oak Harbor 26 years ago. They loved the scenery and the opportunity to hunt and fish.
Bill served as a “Tin Can” sailor in World War II. He was a member of the National Organization of Destroyer Veterans. He received a medal as a survivor of Kamikaze attacks on the USS Intrepid where he was on “fire control.”
He worked for the Naval Civil Service on missile guidance systems at North Island, Calif., and torpedo guidance systems at Keyport, Wash.
Bill was a descendant of German watchmakers and jewelers. In retirement, he enjoyed clock repair and lapidary. These interests he shared at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. He reflected often on his local hunting and fishing trips and those he took to Alaska.
He enjoyed meeting people and making friends. In his last years he devoted his energies to caring for his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Pansy; daughter and son-in-law Sarah and John Mears; son and daughter-in-law Craig and Martha Schreiter; grandson Kirk Schreiter and granddaughter Rachael Schreiter; step-son and daughter-in-law Jerry and Nancy Green; grandsons Shannon Patterson, Scott Patterson and Steve Patterson; six great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.
