Winona Zubrod, 90, longtime resident of Oak Harbor, died March 26, 2005, in San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Zubrod was born in LaCrosse, Wis., Dec. 17, 1914, to Clifford F. Hoard and Martha (Raub) Hoard.
She married Virgil (Zubie) Zubrod Sept. 6, 1942. At the end of World War II, while still in the U.S. Navy, they moved to Oak Harbor in 1948 where she and Virgil raised their two children. She was employed at Northern Sales, and then worked as a seamstress on the Seaplane Base until her retirement in 1966. She enjoyed sewing, crossword puzzles and fishing and was the first women to win the NAS Whidbey Rod and Gun Club Salmon Derby in 1964 with a 48-pound, 8-ounce King Salmon.
Winona is survived by her daughter Cece (Zubrod) Egging and husband Pat of Freeland; and her son Tony Zubrod and wife Becky, of San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren and their spouses, Donna (Egging) and Scott Sievers of Petaluma, Calif. and Michele (Egging) and Gordon Zimmerman of Coupeville; two step-grandchildren, Lisa Kuykendall and Les Grimsinger and wife Kathy, of San Antonio, Texas; great-grandaughters Casey and Samantha Sievers and step-great-grandchildren Leslie and Cavin Kuykendall; and Jaden Grimsinger along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Winona was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, in 1996; as well as her four siblings.
A private graveside service will be held at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. Memorials in lieu of floral tributes can be made in Winona’s name to “Destination Paradise” (a Ministry with Mercy Ships) PO Box 45576, Seattle WA 98145.
