As we venture as a newspaper into 2014, members of the Whidbey News-Times editorial staff were asked to share resolutions for the coming year. Here is what they said:
Keven R. Graves, editor and publisher: To improve in all areas as a newspaper while building on the community’s trust in us and helping to make a positive difference by empowering our readers. Also, to always remember that, without family, all else has little meaning.
Megan Hansen, contributing editor: To take more risks and live life as it happens rather than ponder all the what-ifs.
Jessie Stensland, assistant editor: I resolve to sleep less and drive slower.
Nathan Whalen, staff reporter: I resolve to drink less soda and lose some weight.
Ron Newberry, staff reporter: I want to be more active in 2014, and that involves more exercise, but chiefly some healthier choices when it comes to choosing what to eat. So my 2014 New Year’s Resolution is two-fold: Make eating something self-prepared at home a priority, while reducing the temptation to delve deeper into Oak Harbor’s fastfood smorgasbord.
Janis Reid, staff reporter: To enjoy all the outdoor activities the Pacific Northwest has to offer: biking, hiking, kayaking, sailing, whale watching… all of it. Lose a few pounds. Turn 40 without a meltdown. And go see Canada already.
Sara Hansen, staff reporter: I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions, but I think I need some for 2014. I signed up for the Whidbey Island Half Marathon to hold myself accountable to stay in shape. But most importantly, I want to make time for me and my husband — no matter how busy I get with work. I need to stop and slow down for a moment to catch my breath in order to reset each week.
Jim Waller, sports editor: Reporters are generally inquisitive and social. I’m shy and reserved, not the best attributes for someone in my profession. This year I plan to be more outgoing so I can mature into what is expected of a reporter; you know, someone more annoying and obnoxious.
