With Bryn Langrock scoring from long range and Julie Jansen controlling the paint, the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team squeaked by visiting Marysville Getchell 46-43 Wednesday, Jan.4.
The 46 points was a season high for the Wildcats, and Langrock scored 17, which is an individual high for Oak Harbor this season.
The sophomore guard popped in four three-pointers while Jansen scored 12 points, most coming around the block.
The Chargers tried to front the 6-foot Jansen, but the Wildcats were able to drop passes into their sophomore post, who did the rest, often fighting through double-teams. She also pulled down several offensive rebounds and followed with put-backs to score.
The game featured a frantic finish.
Langrock’s final three-pointer tied the game at 38 with 6:27 remaining.
Jansen followed with two buckets, one off an assist from Rashanna Graham and the other after an offensive board, to give Oak Harbor a 42-38 lead.
After a Charger basket, Langrock hit a free throw to make it 43-40 with just over two minutes left.
Both teams missed the front end of a one-and-one, then Janae Payne connected on a free throw with 23 seconds left.
A three-pointer by Getchell’s Gabrielle Grandbois cut the Wildcat lead to 44-43 with 16 seconds remaining.
Oak Harbor turned the ball over, but MG missed two free throws and a put-back after rebounding the second miss and was forced to foul Deja Bunch.
Bunch hit one of her two shots with 7.6 seconds left. After a Charger turnover, Payne hit a foul shot with 1.5 seconds remaining to finish the scoring.
Grandbois sank a long desperation shot at the end, but it came a tick after the final buzzer.
The Wildcats helped make it interesting by sinking only three of seven free throws in the final 40 seconds.
Getchell missed all three of its foul shots in the last 50 seconds.
“We are working hard in practice,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said, noting the results are showing up on the scoreboard.
One of the team’s offensive goals for the game, he said, was attacking the rim. Payne and Langrock, when not sinking threes, went to the hoop, he noted, to spark the offense.
“Our defense is improving as well,” Atkins said.
Marysville Getchell (3-6, 9-10) led during the early part of the game. It went up 11-4 and then still led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Carley Wika scored all 10 of her points to pace the Chargers in the quarter.
Oak Harbor took its first lead on a Hayley Lundstrom basket with 28 seconds left in the half. Bunch hit two free throws in the final second, and Oak Harbor led 26-23 at the break.
Getchell regained the lead halfway through the third quarter, and led 38-35 going into the fourth period.
Oak Harbor had one of its best shooting nights of the season, hitting 18 of 31 shots (58 percent).
Payne finished with eight points, Bunch five, Lundstrom two and Graham two. Lundstrom also collected five rebounds.
Grandbois led MG with 15 points.
The Wildcats (2-6, 3-15) go to Marysville-Pilchuck (0-8, 0-18) at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, and then complete the regular season at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, when Everett (5-3, 9-9) visits.
