The Oak Harbor senior division youth football team rallied to defeat Bellingham Red 18-16 in the North Cascade League tournament semifinals at Mount Vernon High School Saturday, Nov. 2, to snag a berth in the championship game.

The Oak Harbor Cougars of the midget division weren’t so fortunate, dropping an 8-7 decision at Sedro-Woolley Saturday.

The senior team, the No. 2 seed, returns to Mount Vernon at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, to face fourth-seeded Sedro-Woolley (7-3) in the title contest.

Sedro-Woolley reached the finals by upsetting previously unbeaten and top-seeded Ferndale Saturday.

In the win over Bellingham, Mac Carr and Joe Johnson scored first-half touchdowns to give the Oak Harbor seniors an early lead.

Bellingham bounced back to go up 16-12, then Carr scored the winner on a long run with only three minutes left in the game.

Bellingham drove into field goal range in the final seconds, but Paul Southerland blocked the attempt to secure the win and help Oak Harbor stay undefeated (10-0).

Coach Marcus Carr said, “Once again the assistant coaches had a great game plan on both sides of the ball, and all the kids played outstanding.”

Sedro-Woolley avenged its only loss of the season by edging the Cougars, who finished 7-3.

After a scoreless first half, Sedro-Woolley scored in the third quarter and booted through the extra points. (PAT kicks are worth two points in midget football.)

Oak Harbor countered shortly after and trimmed the gap to 8-7 but couldn’t complete the comeback even though it recovered an onside kick after the touchdown.

The Cougars had one touchdown on a returned fumble called back that would have provided the winning points.

Two fourth-quarter possessions into Sedro-Woolley territory came up empty.
