Four Whidbey Island Running Club members and one of their coaches won their divisions at the Skagit Runners Tulip Run Saturday, April 7, at the Skagit Regional Airport.
Caleb Thompson, 14, led the way by placing first in his age group and third overall in the two-mile race in 12 minutes.
Other winners for WIRC, which is sponsored by the North Whidbey Parks and Recreation District, were Carolynn Wicker (girls 11-13, five miles, 37:28), Logan Clark (boys 11-13, five miles, 31:23) and Harrison Keating (boys 8 and under, two miles, 15:59).
Three of the team’s coaches also ran, and Janel Thompson was first among 30-34 women (two miles, 15:15).
Coach Catie Rodeheffer said, “With it falling at the end of spring break we didn’t have a lot of kids involved, but those we had finished well.”
Next up for the club is the Eagle Run in Oak Harbor 28.
The track season begins for the WIRC in May and the club is recruiting members third through the sixth grade to be involved in sprinting and distance running.
Rodeheffer said, “Our beginners meet year round for all different kinds of fun with running for ages 5 to 8.”
