Amry-Navy ready for action

Several people stationed at NAS Whidbey make team.

NAS Whidbey personnel will compete in the the second annual PacNorthwest Army/Navy flag football game in Bremerton on Nov. 30 at 7 pm.

The Navy is looking to make it two victories in a row after knocking off the Army squad 20-11 last year at Fort Lewis,

Each team selected its better players from the intramural squads that played during the fall. Each base contributed to the team with 11 players from NAS Whidbey making the cut.

Players selected from Whidbey include: PN1 Delrick Baldwin, AD2 Justin Blanco, AC3 Brian Brownlow, 1st Lt. Christopher Cannon, AC2 Kevin Dublynn, AS2 Edward Hearn, AT2 Travis Krueger, Lt j.g. Kyle Matthew, YN2 Curtis McLaurin, AS2 Oliver Randall, and SK2 Napoleon Spencer.

The team will hold several practices in Bremerton this week to prepare for the contest.

Last year was the first game but the organizers are hoping to make it an annual tradition, playing the day before the annual Army/Navy college football game which is being held in Philadelphia this year.

“The commanding general of the Army (at Fort Lewis) and the commanding officer at NAS Whidbey were both on the sidelines, we had the Navy goats as well,” said Gary Robinson, intramural sports coordinator for NAS Whidbey. “This year we’re going to have both bands.”

Robinson added, “We hope to have a pretty big thing. Last year we just kind of put it together, this year it has gotten more developed. We’ll see whether or not it becomes an annual event.”

Robinson is also hoping that the Navy can pull out another victory.

“We have several guys back who played in the game last year,” he said. “Our hopes are high for another win, but we’ll just have to see.”

Former Seattle Seahawks kicker Norm Johnson is the guest of honor.

A tailgate party will start at 4:30 p.m. with no-host food and beverages available. Admission to the event is free. The field is located on the base in Bremerton.
