And the island goes to …

"In the final three minutes the Wolves exploded for an 18-6 run that left the South Whidbey Falcons stunned and gave Coupeville boys team its first win of the year, 74-66. "

“With his team down by three points, junior starter Chris Good sat at the end of the Coupeville bench with his head in his hands and a towel over his head after he fouled out with just five minutes remaining. Good, who led all scorers in the game with 22 points, had to sit and watch his team try to come back from a game-long deficit. But in the final three minutes the Wolves exploded for an 18-6 run that left the South Whidbey Falcons stunned and gave Coupeville its first win of the year, 74-66.We were pumped, said Good. We just got blown out by Sequim and we wanted to show South Whidbey what’s up, who owns the island. I think we just wanted it more than they did.Noah Roehl led the charge as he scored eight consecutive points and 10 overall in the final three minutes for the Wolves. Playing the post, Roehl’s other teammates dumped the ball off underneath, according to the 6-foot-2 inch senior. I just felt that we were stronger inside in our post players so we really wanted to go in there, said head coach Randy King. And Noah was the difference down the stretch.I come out and just try and do what the coaches say, said Roehl. I knew I needed to step it up and the team needed to play better. We have learned to play without Pat (Bennett) and Tyrell (Blouin) and it was just one more, and we did it. With two minutes left and the Wolves up by six, the intensity on the court was fed by the intensity in the stands as the fans for both teams dulled with deafening chants of either Falcon power or Coupeville power. This came on the heels of the Vikings third highest scorer for the game, Tim Gabelein, collecting his fifth foul of the game.Coupeville’s Geoff Hageman also came up big, scoring all five of his points in the closing minutes of the game.We just brought it back together and calmed it down, said Hageman. Unlike the last game where we were trying to rush too much. We were down by five the whole game but we weren’t worried. We knew we could pull it back.Last Wednesday the Wolves were blown out by Sequim even though both games were almost identical in score at half time. Versus the Falcons, unlike against Sequim, fouls were the Wolves best friend as they hit 26-for-36 from the line in the game and 10-for-12 in the final five minutes. They are calling it tight and boy you better hit your freethrows, said King. With two senior starters missing from the lineup for a second consecutive game, Good’s performance cannot be overlooked, as he created shots for himself and others. Throughout the game Good repeatedly drove hard to the basket. In the second quarter Good intercepted a cross-court pass from the Falcons offense and went hard to the hole for the foul. During the third quarter Good again went hard to the hole with two defenders between him and the basket and passed the ball behind their backs to Roehl for the easy two.Chris was carrying the team, said Roehl. The whole team, we need to learn to play with adjustments. But Good was not the only hot Wolf on the court as Brad Sherman knocked down two three-pointers and ended the game with 13 points. During the third quarter Sherman attempted a three-point shot and missed, but took a hard foul a full second after the ball was released. The ensuing three points at the free throw line sparked Coupeville. The Wolves went on to score consecutively and take the lead for the first time since the first shot of the game – Sherman’s first three-pointer. At the beginning of the game it looked as if the Falcons would thrash Coupeville, as they jumped on the Wolves for a 10-0 run in the opening minutes of the game. South Whidbey took a 14-8 lead and eventually increased it to its biggest lead of the contest, by nine. But Coupeville would not let that lead be extended as they went into half time down by six, 35-29. The third quarter see-sawed back and fourth. Coupeville gained enough momentum to lead three times, but never by more than one point.
