The North Whidbey Aquatic Club Aquajets scored 744 points to finish in ninth place out of 50 teams entered in the Pacific Northwest Swimming Championships in Federal Way July 31 through Aug. 3.

The meet was won by King Aquatic Club of Federal Way with 6,463 points.

Leading the way for NWAC was Laura Rosen, high-point award winner in the girls 11- and-12-year-old division, and crowned PNS champion in seven events.

Rosen crushed a 30-year-old PNS record by two seconds, winning the 200-meter butterfly in a time of 2:25.74. The clocking was the fifth fastest time in the nation this year. Also qualifying for national with top-16 times were Rosen’s winning swims in 200 individual medley (2:29.65 for 11th nationally), the 400 individual medley (5:16.96 for 13th nationally), and the 1,500 freestyle (18:37.64 for 12th nationally).

She also set team records in all eight of her individual events and established new qualifying times for Senior Sectionals in the 200 and 400 individual medleys, the 200 breaststroke and the 1,500 freestyle.

In addition to Rosen, two other NWAC’ers set team records: Caley Powers in the 11- and-12-year-old 800 freestyle (10:16.44), 100 butterfly (1:09.81) and 200 butterfly (2:32.62); and Julia Marriott eclipsed the team record in the girls 15-and-over 200 backstroke with a clocking of 2:36.00.

NWAC’er Evan Wilson, competing in the boys 15-and-over division, also earned the high point award, scoring in all eight of his events.

Powers added to the list of Aquajet champions, winning the boys 11- to-12-year-old 200 butterfly in a time of 2:32.62.

Relay team records were set by the 11- and-12-year-old boys 200 medley and freestyle teams of Jarik Bainco, Dakota Powers, Caley Powers and Nick Streubel with times of 2:28.39 and 2:10.68, respectively.

The girls 15-and-over 200 medley team of Amanda Streubel, Rachel Weinstein, Marriott and Meghan Scott set a record of 2:13.50 in the event; and the girls 13 and 14 200 freestyle team of Karina Concepcion, Akasha Trisler, Therese Desquitado and Ciara Hu were also record setters at 2:03.51.

Achieving new Age Group Sectional standards were Rosen in the 50 freestyle (30.09), Josh Jepsen in the 200 breaststroke (2:56.97), Trisler in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.27), and Brandon Vagt in the butterfly 200 (2:29.27) and 400 individual medley (5:14.73).

Three NWAC’ers, Rosen, Caley Powers and Price Hu, qualified for and are competing this week at the Western Zone Swimming Championships in Mt. Hood, Oregon, as members of the Pacific Northwest Swimming Zone All-Star contingent.

Other Aquajets will be in action at the North Cascade Summer Swim League Championships today in Anacortes.
