Aquajets swim well at Kamiak distance meet

At Kamiak High School Nov. 16, The North Whidbey Aquatic Club Aquajets had 13 athletes complete the 1,650-yard freestyle, commonly known as the mile, the longest distance in competitive pool swimming.

At Kamiak High School Nov. 16, The North Whidbey Aquatic Club Aquajets had 13 athletes complete the 1,650-yard freestyle, commonly known as the mile, the longest distance in competitive pool swimming.

NWAC was led by 12-and-under bronze medalist Laura Rosen, who had the fastest NWAC time of the day with a clocking of 18:58.34.

Jacob Jepsen placed 14th in the mixed 13-and-over division and showed the biggest improvement, dropping almost four minutes to finish in time of 19:03.72. His clocking was fast enough to earn him a Pacific Northwest Swimming Championships qualifying time.

The Aquajets also had several first-time milers including 10-year-old Mollie Briddell (28:34.17), 12-year-olds Kasha Trisler (20:32.70) and Olivia Meyer (22:05.58), 13-year-old Brett Vagt (22:25.84), 14-year-old Michael McGinnis (20:56.47) and 16-year-old Bryce Vagt (18:59.86).

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Parks and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college. Tryouts occur Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the city pool from 4:25 to 5:30 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke.
