Oak Harbor High School senior Casiano Atienza finished fourth in singles in the Wesco North 3A tournament in Stanwood Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 22 and 23, and qualified for next week’s district tournament
The District 1 3A tournament is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 29 and 30, at Stanwood High School.
Wildcat junior Harrison Miller placed fifth and is the top alternate for district.
Sixth-seeded Atienza opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to third-seeded Michael Wolf of Stanwood.
He followed that with a 6-2, 7-7(2) win over Marysville Getchell’s Jon Bui.
Atienza and teammate Miller, the fourth seed, faced off Wednesday with a district berth on the line and Atienza won 6-1, 6-3.
Miller began the tournament by beating Everett’s Malcolm Fox 3-6, 6-3, 6-2; then lost to No.1 seed Jonathan Spores of Stanwood 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, senior Jose Dimaculangan and freshman Jackson Wezeman placed sixth.
The pair started with a win, defeating Roman Yefimets and Nathan Kelley of Marysville Getchell 6-2, 6-3. Next they fell to the top seed, Garrett Gosham and Henry Jennings of Stanwood, 7-5, 6-1.
They stayed alive with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback over Owin Ell and Trent Tingelstad of Marysville-Pilchuck.
Marysville Getchell’s third-seeded Tristan Hassler and Ryan Clausen defeated Dimaculangan and Wezeman 6-4, 6-1, dropping the Wildcats into the match for fifth and sixth.
Everett’s Avery Barton and Brian Slack won 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Oak Harbor’s other doubles team, juniors Carter Saar and Tom Dale, lost both its matches. Hasseler/Clausen stopped the Wildcat duo 6-0, 6-2; and Everett’s Mack Temple and Steven Peterson prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
