Oak Harbor took advantage of some sloppy play by Stanwood to notch a 5-4 win on the Spartans’ field Wednesday, April 7.

The Wildcats managed to push across five runs in the sixth inning on just one hit.

Oak Harbor entered the inning down 1-0, then things went wild for the Spartans. Oak Harbor’s Yale Rosen and Brad Farnum were each hit by a pitched ball. Kian Mebane walked to load the bases.

After a pop out, Pat Higbee battled through an eight-pitch at bat and drilled a two-run single to right. Nate Young walked to re-load the bases. Sam Wolfe followed with a grounder to shortstop, but the Stanwood infielder overthrew second base, allowing Mebane and Higbee to score.

Young then finished the scoring by scampering home on a wild pitch.

Now up 5-1, the ‘Cats had to hold on as Stanwood scored two in the sixth and another in the seventh before reliever Ryan Byrne halted the rally with his third save.

Jay Stout started on the mount for Oak Harbor and went five and two-thirds innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits and six walks. He struck out five and evened his record to 2-2.

Higbee had two of the Wildcats’ three hits.

Oak Harbor (2-4, 5-5) travels to Everett (0-4, 1-7) Thursday, April 8, to make up a game rained out Tuesday. Stanwood (2-3, 3-3) comes to Oak Harbor Friday, April 9, at 4 p.m.
