Oak Harbor took advantage of its scoring opportunities and Cascade didn’t as the Wildcats defeated the Bruins 11-4 Saturday, March 19, in Everett.

Wildcat starting pitcher Jay Stout wasn’t sharp, but the senior showed his experience and poise as he worked out of several jams.  Ten (five hits and five walks) of the first 14 Bruin hitters reached base but not one scored.

Stout escaped a jam in the first with the help of catcher Sam Glavick nailing a would-be stealer.  In the second, a double play thwarted another Cascade threat.  After Cascade put its first two runners on in the third, Stout retired nine of the next 10 hitters to leave with five shutout innings.

The Wildcats, unlike Cascade, produced runs when the chances arose.

In the first, Sam Wolfe was hit by a pitch, Stout singled and Yale Rosen walked. Ground outs by Josh Evans and Justin Counts plated runs.

In the third, Oak Harbor picked up another run. Glavick led with a double and Matt Jackson entered as a courtesy runner. Ryan Byrne flew out to dead center and Jackson advanced to third. Peter Franssen also flied to center and scored Jackson.

Stout singled to start the fourth, then moved around the bases on three wild pitches for Oak Harbor’s fourth run.

A five-run fifth put the game away. Glavick walked, Byrne doubled down the line and Franssen walked to fill the bases. Wolfe slugged a two-run single for the initial runs. Stout walked to reload the bases. Rosen ripped a two-run single, and Evans hit a sacrifice fly.

Oak Harbor scored its final two runs in the sixth.  Rosen doubled and then scored on the game’s only error when the Bruin catcher’s pickoff throw skipped into center field. Evans hit an infield single and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Cascade picked up three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh against relievers Austin Walker and Byrne.

Rosen went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double and two walks. Wolfe was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Stout finished 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs.

Both teams finished with nine hits. Cascade stranded 11 runners; Oak Harbor left six.

Coach Tyson VanDam said, “We scored in almost every inning and played with great intensity. We played well; Jay pitched well.”

He added, “We had 75 percent quality at bats.”

Oak Harbor (1-1-1) entertains Monroe (1-1) Thursday, March 24, a 4 p.m. in a nonleague game.
