A five-run fourth inning helped Coupeville pick up its first Cascade Conference win of the spring with a 6-5 victory over visiting Sultan Monday, April 18.
The Wolves received a strong pitching performance from Ian Smith, who overcame seven Coupeville errors; offensively, he collected the go-ahead RBI.
The senior right-hander pitched a complete game, six-hitter for the Wolves, surrendering only two earned runs and one walk while striking out six.
While the Wolves’ defense was shaky at times, it turned two double plays to aid Smith’s effort.
Coupeville scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead it would hold until the fourth inning. Jake Tumblin led with a single, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball.
Sultan finally got to Smith in the fourth with four runs off three hits and two errors.
Coupeville responded with five runs in its half of the fourth to take the lead for good.
With one out, the Wolves received consecutive singles by Ben Etzell, Kole Kellison, Brandt Bodamer, Drew Chan and Wade Schaef to score two runs.
The Turks changed pitchers and got a strikeout, but then Tumblin walked to force in a run. Smith followed with a two-run single to secure the lead, 6-4.
Sultan tacked on a run in the fifth and had the tying run aboard in the seventh when Bodamer ended the threat with a running catch in the right-field gap.
Coupeville (2-10, 1-7) and Sultan (3-8, 3-7) square off again Wednesday, April 20, in Sultan at 4 p.m.
