Breaking out of a scoring slump, the Coupeville High School softball team scored five runs in its final two at bats to clip visiting Concrete 5-3 Wednesday, March 16.
The Wolves went 10 innings over a two-game span without plating a run, then Lauren Rose tripled home Veronica Crownover, who reached on an error, in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
An error and double helped the Lions score the game’s first run in the third inning.
After breaking the drought in the fifth inning, Coupeville erupted for four runs in the sixth.
Sarah Wright got things going with a one-out single, then Hope Lodell walked. Three errors and a single by Rose pushed across the runs.
Coupeville’s defense, which committed only one error in the first two games, struggled against Concrete.
After giving up the unearned run in the third, three more errors in the seventh allowed the Lions to threaten.
Concrete scored twice in the seventh and had the bases loaded when Katrina McGranahan fanned the final Lion batter to end the uprising.
McGranahan finished with a five-hitter and struck out 11.
Chloe Stidman had three of the Lions’ hits.
Coupeville hit the ball early, it struck out only three times over the first four innings, but couldn’t come up with a clutch hit until Rose’s triple.
“It took us awhile to get going, but we stuck with it,” coach Kevin McGranahan said. “We were a lot better with the sticks today.”
Rose finished 2-for-3 with a walk, Wright and Tiffany Briscoe each singled, and Lodell walked three times.
The Wolves had only five strikeouts after fanning 31 times over the previous two games.
“We had a good all-around game,” coach McGranahan said. “We were in stride all day.”
Coupeville (2-1) goes to Concrete (0-1) at 4 p.m. Friday, March 18, for a rematch.
