It was a Bayne-ful experience for the Chimacum football team.
Coupeville running back Josh Bayne shredded the Cowboys for 306 rushing yards — including a 95-yard TD romp on a broken play — and scored six touchdowns in the Wolves’ 57-14 win at Chimacum Friday, Oct. 17.
The victory sets up a critical showdown with Klahowya in the final Olympic League game. It will come on homecoming night at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Mickey Clark Field.
The winner of the Coupeville-Klahowya game earns a trip to the playoffs; the loser is eliminated.
Win or lose, Coupeville will round out the regular season with a trip to 2B Concrete (6-1) for a nonleague game at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.
Not only did Bayne run for 306 yards in the thumping of Chimacum (0-5, 0-7), he caught three passes — all for touchdowns — for 64 yards and returned a kickoff 30 yards for an impressive 400 yards of offensive production.
Bayne’s 306 yards came on 18 tries for an sparkling 17 yards per carry.
He wasn’t alone in gashing the Cowboy defense. In all, Coupeville ran for 528 yards and averaged 13.9 yards per tote even though it was missing two injured linemen, Oscar Liquidano and Brenden Gilbert.
Six different Wolves carried the ball and five finished with an average of over 10 yards per try.
Wiley Hesselgrave ran for 111 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, and Jacob Martin added 80 yards on seven rushes.
Hesselgrave’s night included a 32-yard run and a 23-yard reception; Martin had a 40-yard run.
Chance Kleinfelter ran once for 14 yards and a TD, and QB Joel Walstad had one carry for 15 yards.
Walstad hit six of 11 passes for 111 yards and three scores with no interceptions.
Hesselgrave topped the defense with 13 tackles (10 solo).
Bayne followed with 10 tackles, Matt Shank and Aaron Wright had six each, and Hunter collected five.
C.J. Smith grabbed an interception, and J.R. Pendergrass, Shank and Wright recorded sacks.
Coupeville led only 7-0 after the first quarter as penalties slowed the Wolves’ attack.
“We had five or six holding calls in the game,” coach Troy Maggio said. “I think there might have been four in a row at one time in the first quarter.”
That was about it for negatives, Maggio said, as his club rebounded from two straight losses to jump back into the playoff hunt.
Coupeville (3-2, 4-3) led 14-6 at halftime and 35-6 after the third quarter.
