Sports records are made to be broken.
Heading into Friday night’s non-league football matchup against Cascade, Oak Harbor High School was riding high sporting an undefeated record at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
Unfortunately the young Wildcat squad made a couple of mistakes, which a team can’t afford to do against the likes of Cascade, and the Bruins defeated Oak Harbor 15-10.
Despite the loss, new Oak Harbor head coach Jay Turner left the stadium with a positive attitude.
“We did some things we think we can fix,” Turner said. “We had a couple of overthrows, a couple of mental breakdowns and a coverage breakdown on their long pass.”
Turner said prior to the game that Cascade was going to be a tough first-game matchup for the Wildcats; and they were.
“They were a physical team and their quarterback is as advertised,” he said. “They guy is phenomenal and as fast as anybody that we’ll ever see.”
Aaron Frye, the Burins’ quarterback, hurt Oak Harbor on both sides of the line of scrimmage.
With 1:24 remaining in the first quarter, the senior signal caller hooked up with split end Spencer Hancock on a 60-yard scoring strike and then hit Lex Duncan with a 2-point conversion pass to make the score 8-0.
Trailing 8-0, the Wildcats played tough on defense allowing the Bruins to record no first downs in the second quarter and only one in the third.
“We were down in the red zone a few times and we didn’t get anything out of it,” Turner said. “I think we were down there three or four times and got only three points. We can’t have that, once we get in the zone we have to get points.”
Cascade made the lead stand up until the 2:13 mark of the third quarter when Kevin Flavin capped off an 18-play Oak Harbor drive hitting a 22-yard field goal to make the score 8-3. The drive chewed up nearly 10 minutes of the third quarter and Cascade managed to run just four plays in the period.
Frye scored on a 13-yard run at the 10:41 mark of the fourth quarter and Casey Wiedmer’s kick gave the Bruins a 15-3 lead.
Starting at their own 31-yard line with 3:44 left in the game, Oak Harbor quarterback J Jordan engineered a 10-play drive hitting Stephen Lewis with a scoring pass on a fourth and eight situation from the Cascade 37-yard line, and Flavin’s kick cut the lead to 15-10.
Lewis led the Wildcats’ offensive attack carrying the ball 10 times for 63 yards and catching three passes for an additional 61 yards.
Donovan Hunt had seven carries for 54 yards.
Oak Harbor had a final chance recovering a fumble at the 48-yard line with 45 seconds remaining in the game, but Frye picked off an errant Jordan pass with 4 seconds on the clock to put the game in the book.
Frye carried the ball 13 times for 93 yards for Cascade and was 4-of-6 in passing for 77 yards.
“This game gave us some positive things we can build on,” Turner said. “We just have to get better, work on our mistakes and get ready for Monroe next week.”
The Wildcats travel to Monroe Friday, Sept. 12, to face the Bearcats who were a 20-6 winner over Shorewood in their season opener.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
