At Oak Harbor High School, the “Big Three” is not one of the obscure Liverpool folk-rock groups from the early 1960’s.
Rather, the trio is comprised of a pair of junior athletes along with a sophomore who have earned their places in the record books this year.
The group is headed by junior Mietra Smollack who, unlike many of today’s high school athletes that specialize in just one sport, excels in three.
Smollack is a member of the Wildcat cross country, basketball and track teams, and has earned all-league honors in all three sports this year.
“I was a first team all-league player in basketball and a league all star in the 800 and 1,600-meter events during the track season,” she said. “I think I made honorable mention in cross country, but I’m not sure.”
Despite being slender in stature, Smollack is a gritty player and said her biggest thrills this year were setting new school records in the 800 and 1,600.
“I set a goal before the season began to break the 800 record,” she said. “It was set by Molly Bull in 2001 and I am friends with her mother. She kind of encouraged me this year to break her daughter’s record.”
Bull’s record was 2:14.61 and Smollack ran a time of 2:14.12 in the state preliminaries. She finished seventh overall at the state track meet in the event
“As far as the 1,600, I hadn’t planned on breaking the school record,” she said. “I just started running that distance this year, but I was happy. My placement at the state meet was no big deal, I just wanted to break the school record and I did.”
At the state track meet, Smollack shaved over three seconds off the old mark of 5:01.69 set by Natalie Turner in 1993, running a time of 4:58.61 to finish in fourth place in the finals.
Rumble, the second junior in the group, jumped a personal best of 6-feet, 6- inches to finish third in the high jump at the state meet.
“I didn’t jump that much this year, but 6-6 is the personal best of my career,” he said.
In addition to his accomplishment on the track that earned him WesCo North all-star status, Rumble was also a first-team all-league and a second-team all-state wide receiver on the Oak Harbor state championship football team.
In basketball, he was voted a second team WesCo North all-star.
During the football season he caught 40 passes for 691 yards and 17 touchdowns, including the game-winner against Mariner in double overtime in the second round of the playoffs.
He rushed for an additional 278 yards and led the Wildcats in scoring with 104 points.
Rumble said despite success on the football field, his biggest thrill of the year was how the basketball team turned around.
“It was nice winning the state football championship, but what I really enjoyed was the big, long-term success of the basketball team,” he said. “Beating a powerhouse team like Marysville-Pilchuck in double overtime in the last game of the season was my biggest thrill.”
The youngest of the group, sophomore Carson McKole, competes in soccer and track.
This season, she was a WesCo North first team all-star for her victory in the 100 meters at the league meet and teamed with Smollack, Sarah Gordon and Kirsten Roof in the 800-meter relay.
McKole was also just six one one-hundredth of a second from setting a new school record in the 200.
“My goal is to break the record next year,” she said.
McKole placed 12th in the 100 at the state meet and 13th in the 200 with times of 12.46 and 25.90, respectively. Both times were personal bests.
The relay team finished 15th overall with a time of 1:49.47.
McKole said just making it to the state track meet was the biggest thrill of the 2007 season.
“I was shocked,” she said. “When I came out for track I wasn’t very serious that I wanted to do good. People were telling me I could go to state and I ended up going. It was an experience.”
Summer doesn’t bring an end to athletic activities for the trio.
“I’ll be playing select basketball and going all over during the month of July,” Smollack said.
Rumble said he will also be playing select basketball.
“I also plan on a attending a couple of football combines,” he said. “That’s the whole summer right there.”
Heading off to a soccer camp is on McKole’s schedule for the summer break.
The threesome will make up a strong nucleus for three Wildcat teams in the fall and with the winning attitude they have developed this season, success for them and their respective teams is definitely on the horizon.
