Marysville-Pilchuck used its speed and strength to run by the visiting Oak Harbor High School soccer team 2-0 Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Midway through the first half, Oak Harbor made a mistake on a corner kick, according to Wildcat coach Mike Lonborg, and the Tomahawks (3-1-1, 4-4-1) headed in the night’s first goal.

M-P scored on a penalty kick with about 20 minutes left in the match.

“We had four or five chances, especially in the closing minutes, but failed to finish the opportunities,” Lonborg said. “That’s pretty much the only thing holding us back at the moment, some scoring.”

“M-P was incredibly fast,” Lonborg added. “It was also a very physical, nasty game. Four yellow cards were given, one for us and three for them.”

Lonborg liked the play of his defensive line, which did “a great job, especially considering the speed M-P had. The midfield, especially the middle mids, played well and shut the middle down.”

Oak Harbor (0-5, 2-5-1) plays at Anacortes (2-6) at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in a non-league match that was originally scheduled for Sept. 26.
