A late run came up short for the Coupeville High School fastpitch team as it lost 8-5 to visiting Cedarcrest Friday, April 6.

Down 8-0, the Wolves picked up a run in the sixth and then put a scare into first-place Cedarcrest (6-1) by rallying for four runs in the seventh.

Three consecutive two-out hits helped Cedarcrest scoot to a 2-0 lead in the first. The Red Wolves tacked on another pair in the third and four more in the fourth before being shut down over the final three innings. Coupeville starter McKayla Bailey tossed the scoreless fifth, and reliever Ali Trumbull put up the zeroes in the sixth and seventh.

Coupeville’s uprising in the seventh started with Arianna Johnson’s double to left. Madi Roberts got on board on an error that scored Johnson. Trumbull followed with a double and Bessie Walstad walked to load the bases.

Hailey Hammer singled in two runs and Walstad scored the final run on a passed ball.

Cedarcrest finished with 12 hits while the Wolves ended with five, two by Trumbull.

Co-coach David King said, “Offensively we started slow; this has been our pattern the last two games. The coaches have been preaching intensity and being aggressive on offense and playing the whole game that way, not waiting until the later innings.”

He added, “Defensively, this was our best game. We played error free.”

The Wolves (3-3, 4-4) travel to Lakewood (5-2) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 10. Coupeville nipped the Cougars 16-15 March 21.
