The Central Whidbey 9/10 all-star softball team fell 7-1 to District 1 in the opening round of the state tournament Saturday, July 11, in Vancouver.
Central Whidbey, the District 11 champions, play District 8 (Bothell, Shoreline, North Seattle) at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 12, in a loser-out game.
District 8 lost its opener 6-0 to District 2 (Seqium to Shelton).
Although Central Whidbey lost to District 1 (Stanwood to Lynnwood), it played a “great game,” according to coach Mimi Johnson.
Central Whidbey tallied its run in the third inning when Kaia Richmond walked, stole second and third and scored on a hit by Stella Johnson.
Johnson finished with two hits, one a double. Chanel Sterna also doubled, while Mckenna Somes, Mckaela Meffert and Jill Price singled.
Richmond walked twice.
Central Whidbey had runners on in every inning and left seven runners in scoring position.
District 1 scored three runs in the first inning with the help of two errors and added two more unearned runs in the third.
