One bad run in the second quarter spelled doom for the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team in a 57-48 loss to visiting Marysville Getchell Friday, Jan. 15.
The Chargers (3-0, 9-4) scored eight straight points early in the second period to take a double-digit lead in what, otherwise, was a back-and-forth game.
Three points by Bryn Langrock and a bucket by Julie Jansen gave Oak Harbor an 11-10 lead with 2:03 left in the first period. That would be the final time the Wildcats were on top.
The Chargers scored the quarter’s final six points to lead 16-11.
Langrock opened the second quarter with a three-ball, making it 16-14, then Marysville Getchell, with the help of several Oak Harbor turnovers, tallied eight consecutive points to lead by 10. The margin stayed at 10, 30-20, when the teams heading into the locker room for halftime.
With the help of two three-pointers by Langrock, Oak Harbor bounced back from a slow start after the break and trailed by 11, 39-28, heading into the fourth period.
Baskets by Deja Bunch, AnnaBelle Whitefoot, Matti Miesle and Jansen enabled the Wildcats to cut the lead to six, 42-36, halfway through the final quarter. Oak Harbor would get no closer as the game turned into a free-throw shooting contest over the final three minutes when the teams combined to shoot 20.
The Wildcats finished the game hitting 19 of 25 foul shots, led by Bunch who drained nine of 10.
Getchell was 12-for-17 from the line.
Bunch led Oak Harbor in scoring with 15 points, Langrock had 12, Jansen seven, Rashanna Graham six, Whitefoot five, Miesle two and Lexi Jones one.
The Chargers’ Carley Wika and Gabrielle Grandbois each scored 16 to lead MG.
Getchell scored 16 points off 18 Oak Harbor turnovers; the Wildcat defense forced 23 turnovers.
“I like how we kept fighting,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said. “We got close but couldn’t get over that six-point bubble.”
“Julie played really well, and Deja did a good job attacking the rim,” he added.
