If one only looks at the final score of King’s 3-0 sweep of Coupeville’s volleyball team Tuesday in Seattle, he or she won’t get the whole story.

What appears to be an easy win for the Knights was anything but. The state’s top-ranked 1A team had to battle for every point in its 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 win.

Coupeville coach Toni Crebbin said her team “didn’t shut down and was mentally tough” throughout the match even though it was playing without two of its top weapons, middle hitter/blocker Kyra Ilyankof and outside hitter Jessica Riddle, out with injuries.

Crebbin inserted Hannah Christensen into the lineup to help take up the slack from the missing starters and got a stuff block, two kills, and eight-for-eight serving from the freshman.

Kaylie Kellison had four aces in 14-14 serving, Julie Swankie had 11 assists and 13-13 serving, and Jessica Blanchette added four kills and a strong defensive effort.
