Competing in its fourth game in five days, Coupeville hit a wall midway through the fourth quarter and was outscored 12-4 down the stretch as the Wolverines picked up the win and remained undefeated in seven games.

Coupeville struggled to connect from the field and trailed the entire game until tying it at 23 with six minutes left in the game.

Then the gas tank went dry as Coupeville committed three consecutive turnovers that the Wolverines turned into six points and the Wolves never recovered.

Coupeville failed to take advantage of early Friday Harbor mistakes and fell behind 9-6 in the first quarter although it put up 11 shots to the Wolverines’ six.

The cold shooting continued in the second period and Friday Harbor entered the locker room with a 16-10 lead as the Wolves finished the first half hitting only five of 23 tries.

The Wolves worked themselves back into the game in the third quarter behind buckets by Cassidi Rosenkrance and Amanda Fabrizi, a hoop and foul shot by Katie Smith and two free throws from Bessie Walstad.

Down 20-19 going into the fourth quarter, Walstad and Smith scored to counter a three-ball by Friday Harbor and the teams were tied at 23.  Then came the turnovers and Friday Harbor pulled away.

Walstad finished with 12 points, Smith five, Rosenkrance four, Taya Boonstra four and Fabrizi two.

The poor shooting night wasted a strong defensive effort by Coupeville. Only four Wolverines scored; Mandy Turnbull had a game-high 16.

Coupeville (0-3, 1-6) plays at South Whidbey (3-0, 4-4) Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 5:15 p.m.
