Because the players are nervous, anxious and rusty in opening games, their performances are often ragged.

Not Coupeville’s boys’ team. They left all the unsightly play to Darrington as the Wolves destroyed the Loggers 82-32 Friday in Coupeville.

Hunter Hammer and Erik King helped push the Wolves to a 22-10 first-quarter lead. Hammer, a 6-5, 230-pound post, controlled the inside game with nine points in the opening frame while King came off the bench to hit two 3-pointers to scorch the Loggers from long-range.

The Wolves had the game well in hand, 38-15, heading into halftime.

In the third quarter Coupeville’s Chad Brookhouse made sure Darrington wasn’t going to rally. The senior hit four 3-balls and the Wolves continued to build its lead to 65-24 by the end of the period.

Playing just three quarters, Brookhouse finished with 18 points and five rebounds, and Hammer had 16 points and 11 boards.

Ben Hayes scored 11 (all in the fourth quarter), Jason Bagby nine, King nine, JD Wilcox seven, Ian Smith four, Tim Walstad four (and eight rebounds), Nevin Maranda two and Dalton Engle two; Tyler King had three assists.
