Coupeville’s girls’ basketball team overcame an early deficit, built a big lead then hung on to defeat visiting Darrington 51-46 Friday.
The Wolves, trailing 21-15 midway through the second period, went on a 15-0 spree that helped them go on top 37-26 going into the final quarter.
Coupeville stretched its lead to 44-28 only to see Darrington go on a 17-5 run and cut the margin to 49-45 in the final minute, but the Loggers couldn’t get closer.
The Wolves, who suffered through a poor shooting performance in their season opening win at Concrete, received two sharp-shooting efforts in the win over Darrington.
Megan Smith hit six of seven field goal attempts (three-for-three from beyond the arc) and finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore point guard Cassidi Rosenkrance was four-for-six from the floor and had 12 points, five assists, and four steals.
Marie Hesselgrave added 14 points and 10 rebounds against the taller Loggers, and Ashley Manker also pulled down 10 boards to go with her three points and four assists.
Kendra O’Keefe scored three points and Courtney Boyd two.
Coupeville is now 2-0; Darrington is 0-1.
