Putting the finishing touches on the Senior Night celebration, the Coupeville High School volleyball team blanked visiting Granite Falls 3-0 Tuesday, Oct. 22.
All senior classes are special, but the troupe from 2019-20 is particularly significant to coach Cory Whitmore; they and Whitmore began their Coupeville volleyball journey at the same time. The eight seniors entered the program in the fall of 2016, Whitmore’s first year as head coach.
The class includes Hannah Davidson, Emma Mathusek, Lucy Sandahl, Scout Smith, Maya Toomey-Stout, Zoe Trujillo, Raven Vick and Willow Vick.
“Great Senior Night with a fantastic group of seniors and their families,” Whitmore said. “This group has meant so much to me for four years, and I’m so proud and honored to be their coach and mentor.
“We have more goals to reach together, and, as always, this group looks forward to the challenge.”
Those goals and challenges include taking on unbeaten and second-ranked King’s (8-0, 12-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24. Should the 15th-ranked Wolves (7-1, 12-1) pull off the upset, they will move into a tie for first place in the North Sound Conference.
A trip to Sultan (1-7, 5-9) on Monday, Oct. 28, completes the regular season, then Coupeville begins district tournament play and a quest for a deep run into the playoffs.
District begins Nov. 2 and concludes when Coupeville hosts the final round Nov. 5. Five teams advance to the bi-district tournament.
Coupeville defeated Granite Falls 25-21, 25-11, 25-16.
Smith led the way with four kills, six digs, 24 assists and five aces, while Toomey-Stout added 11 kills, nine digs and four aces.
Trujillo paced the hitting attack with 13 kills; she also collected six digs.
Davidson chipped in with five kills and five aces, and Sandahl had three aces and three digs.
Maddie Vandrak registered five kills, Raven Vick two aces and Mathusek four digs.
