For the second time in three matches this spring, the Coupeville High School tennis team was unable to finish a match.
The Wolves were knotted 3-3 with Klahowya Thursday, March 24, in Silverdale but had to leave before the conclusion of the contest to catch the ferry home.
Coupeville’s season-opening match with Granite Falls March 14 was stopped because of rain with the Wolves leading 3-1.
At Klahowya, first singles was the only match not completed. Valen Trujillo and her opponent Sydney Jackson were locked in a 5-5 tie when play was stopped after three hours of battle. Trujillo dropped the first set 7-6(7-0) and won the second 6-4.
Coupeville collected points in second singles and in first and second doubles.
After missing the previous match, Bree Daigneault returned to win second singles 7-5, 6-1.
Sage Renninger and Payton Aparicio were 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 winners in first doubles; while McKenzie Bailey and Jazmine Franklin took second doubles 6-3, 6-2.
Renninger and Aparicio faced one half of a doubles team that reached the semifinals of the state tournament last spring.
“Our girls were on point,” coach Ken Stange said. “Down 4-5 (in the third set), Payton and Sage found a way to win the final three games. It was easily the most satisfying win of the season for our ones.”
Coupeville (0-1) hosts Friday Harbor (0-1) at 3 p.m. Monday, March 28.
