The Klahowya Secondary School softball team pulled away in the later innings to defeat Coupeville 9-1 Wednesday, April 27, in Silverdale.
The Eagles (3-1, 8-5) led 3-1 going into the fourth inning and then scored twice in each of the final three frames to defeat the Wolves.
Coupeville’s only run came in the second inning when Jae LeVine singled after walks to Sarah Wright and Mikayla Elfrank.
Wright pitched her first complete game for the Wolves.
“She did a good job and the defense played well behind her,” coach Kevin McGranahan said.
Plays in the outfield highlighted the defensive effort, including two nice grabs by Tamika Nastali and another by Robin Cedillo.
The Wolves also put in a stronger offensive performance against Klahowya pitcher Amber Bumbalough, last year’s conference MVP, then when the teams met earlier this spring, McGranahan said.
“We just couldn’t get the big hits to drive in runs,” he said.
Coupeville stranded eight base runners.
The loss was Coupeville’s sixth in the past seven games after starting the season 6-1.
In addition to LeVine, Lauren Rose, Hope Lodell, Elfrank and Cedillo singled for Coupeville.
“The girls played upbeat today and again never hung their heads and fought to the end,” McGranahan said.
Coupeville (2-4, 7-7) hosts Port Townsend (0-5, 0-10), the team it beat for its two most recent wins, at 4 p.m. Friday, April 29.
