Scoring when it needed to most, the Coupeville High School boys basketball team came from behind for a 72-65 win at Chimacum Tuesday, Jan. 19.
The win lifted the Wolves (2-1, 7-6) within a game of Olympic League leader Port Townsend (3-0, 5-9). The two teams meet in the second of three games at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, on the Redhawks’ court.
Port Townsend defeated Coupeville 59-45 Jan. 5. They will finish the series in Coupeville at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Defending champion Chimacum held slight leads throughout Tuesday’s game. The Cowboys (0-2, 3-11) were up 14-12 after the first quarter, 31-27 at the break and 49-44 heading into the fourth.
The Wolves then erupted for 27 fourth-quarter points. Risen Johnson did much of the damage in the comeback with eight points, receiving help from Jordan Ford, Hunter Smith and Wiley Hesselgrave.
Coupeville aided is cause by knocking down clutch free throws, drilling eight of 11 in the final frame.
The Wolves received an offensive lift from much of the lineup and piled up 72 points even though season scoring leader Hesselgrave netted only four.
Johnson finished with 18 points, Smith 16, Ford 14, DeAndre Mitchell seven, Gabe Wynn four, Dante Mitchell four, J.J. Johnson three and Desmond Bell one.
