A muddy field and heavy winds didn’t stop the Coupeville High School baseball team from getting off to a solid start Saturday, March 10, at home.

The Wolves split a double-header, thumping Concrete 11-0 before being nipped by traditional power Adna 3-2.

Next up, Coupeville hosts Port Townsend at 4 p.m. Monday, March 12.

In the win over Concrete, Ben Etzell and Aaron Trumbull combined to throw a no-hitter in the five-inning game.

Etzell tossed the first three innings, striking out four and walking eight.

Trumbull had one strikeout and one walk in his two innings of work.

Etzell and Morgan Payne were the offensive stars; each went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs.

Wade Schaef rapped a double and scored two runs; Jake Tumblin walked three times, stole three bases and scored two runs; Korbin Korzan had a single, run and two stolen bases; and Brandt Bodamer chipped in with a single.

The Wolves scored six times in the first inning, four in the second and one in the third.

The big opening inning was spurred by a walk to Tumblin, doubles by Schaef and Etzell, and singles by Payne and Korzan.

Adna squeaked out the win with a two-out single dumped over the first baseman’s head in the seventh inning.

The Pirates scored in the first on a walk and two hits and Coupeville evened it up in the fourth on a double by Etzell, a single by Payne and an error.

Adna followed the same script in the fifth — double, single and error — and went up 2-1.

A walk to Wade Schaef and two errors helped the Wolves tie it in the sixth.

Coupeville had a chance in the seventh. Bodamer led with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scooted third on an infield out. A walk to Josh Bayne put runners at the corners, but a pickoff and fly out ended the threat.

Etzell collected two hits, including a double, and Tumblin and Korzan had singles.

Bodamer started for the Wolves, and coach Willie Smith said he was “super pleased” on how the senior threw. In four innings he had four walks, three hits and a strikeout.

Schaef finished the game and gave up four hits and a walk.

Smith said, “I don’t like to lose, but that was a good ball game. We played really good defense, and we gave ourselves a chance to win.”
