Coupeville track meet hampered by weather

Chilly, rainy day blamed for slow times

Early spring track meets at Mickey Clark Field in Coupeville often result in the weather being as much of a challenge to the athletes as the distance of a race or the length of a jump.

Thursday’s dual meet against Archbishop Murphy was no exception and competitors battled chilly temperatures and soggy footing.

In the end, the Coupeville boys won the meet 66-59, while the eight-person girls team went down to defeat 85-54.

“Spring track at Coupeville is great, isn’t it,” coach Randy King remarked.

Despite the conditions, a few good times and distances were recorded and several competitors said they were pleased with their performances.

In the girls 100-meter hurdles, senior Chelsea Rosenkrance finished second in a time of 17.73.

“It turned out all right, not as bad as I thought,” she said. “I got off to a slow start, but I ran as fast as I did last week so I didn’t get any worse.”

Rosenkrance also raced to a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in a time of 53.84.

Also placing second for the Wolves was senior Kim Kisch in the 100-meter dash.

“It was pretty good,” she said about her time of 13.75 in the event. “This is the first meet I’ve competed in this season.”

Kisch also had a second-place finish in the 200-meters and was a member of the second-place finishing 4×100 meter relay team.

Distance runner Madeline Isaacson won the 3,200 meters in a time of 14:40.11 and finished second in the 1,600 meters.

Carman Houk had a pair of second-places finishes in the 400 and 800-meter events running times of 1:06.43 and 2:51.16, respectively.

Erin Engle won the javelin with a throw of 58-8.

“I was hoping for around 55 feet today and I threw 58, so it was better than I thought,” the freshman said.

Also finishing in first place was senior Alyssa Kelley in the shot put heaving the ball 25-6.5 and Corrine Gaddis, also a senior, tied for first place in the long jump with a leap of 15-2.

For the boys, Kyle King won the 800 and 3,200 meter events and finished second in the 400 meters.

King’s time in the 3,200 was 12.37.44, nearly two minutes slower that his best time last year.

Coach King attributed the clocking to the poor weather and track conditions.

Brian Miller was a double event winner for the Wolves capturing the gold medal in the high jump at 5-2, and throwing the javelin a

distance of 145-1.

He also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4×100-meter relay team.

The quartet of Danny Brown, Yassen Lile, Trevor Pigusch and Miller breezed to victory in a time of 49.47.

Lile also ran to a second-place finish in the 200 meters.

Coupeville dominated the 100 meters with Keaton Farris winning in a time of 11.90 and Pigusch placing second at 12.35.

Farris also finished in second place in the long jump.

Running the 400 meters for the

first time ever, Steven McDonald won the event in a time of 54.75.

“This was the first time for both Kyle and me in this event,” the winded junior sprinter said after the race. “I didn’t do as well as I thought. This was not a real big meet and there weren’t a lot of people here so the adrenalin wasn’t flowing. It’s cold, too.”

Jake Weaver had a pair of second-place finishes in the 110-and 300-meter hurdles events and Matt Williams won the discus with a throw of 111-6.

The Wolfpack travels to Sultan Thursday for a 4 p.m. meet against the Turks and Cedarcrest.
