Cross country: ‘Cat girls win 16-team meet; King takes boys race

The Oak Harbor girls cross country team and Coupeville’s Tyler King both posted impressive wins at the Mount Baker Invitational at Silver Lake Park in Maple Falls Saturday, Oct. 2.

The Wildcat girls finished first in the 16-team meet by placing six racers in the top 20.

King captured the varsity boys 5K race in 15:05.6, 50 seconds faster than the second place competitor.

Oak Harbor’s girls grabbed the team title with 40 points, well ahead of second-place Burlington-Edison with 109. Lakeside was third with 148.

The Wildcats entered the meet as the state’s seventh ranked 3A team; Lakeside was ranked fifth. Sehome, the state’s top ranked 2A team was originally scheduled to compete but did not take part.

Adrianna Royal (19:24.24) placed sixth to lead the local girls, followed in the next two spots by teammates Allison Duvenez (19:24.64) and Christina Wicker (19:26.73).

Abby Leete (19:42.25) was 10th, Alex Laiblin (20:02.64) 14th and Hannah Bressler (20:13.99) 18th out of 111.

The Oak Harbor boys were 13th out of 16 teams with 319 points. Lindbergh won with 53. Joshua Scrum recorded the best Oak Harbor finish, 55th (17:59.96) out of 120.

The Wildcats’ Taylor VonGrey (21:03.44) won the JV girls race. Four other ‘Cats placed in the top 20: Heather Dale (fourth, 21:37.5), Emily Bain (14th, 23:11.58) and Mackenzie Jackson (15th, 23:11.92).

In the freshman boys race, Caley Powers (17:08.4) and Clay Richards (18:39.28) finished second and 11th out of 97.

Oak Harbor goes to Stanwood along with Snohomish and Marysville-Pilchuck Thursday, Oct. 7, at 3:45 p.m.
