Zero. Three. Nine. Five.
The first three numbers are the points the Coupeville High School girls basketball team limited Lakewood to the first three quarters in a 40-32 win at Arlington Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The fourth number, five, is the number of games Coupeville played on the road to open the season. The Wolves (1-1, 2-3) finally get to play at home at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, against South Whidbey (0-2, 3-2).
The Wolves’ game plan at Lakewood was to pressure the Cougar guards, and the strategy worked early, leading to steals and fast-break lay-ups. Amanda Fabrizi led the Coupeville charge with six first-quarter points and the Wolves jumped out to a 10-0 lead.
It was much the same in the second frame, and Coupeville led at the break 17-3. The gap could have been greater, but the Wolves saw a number of shots just rim out, according to coach David King.
King said the Wolves “moved the ball offensively better than we have in the previous four games.” He added, “Overall we were patient on offense in the first half, looked to swing the ball to get the defense of Lakewood moving. This allowed us open shots throughout the half.”
Hailey Hammer scored six points in the third quarter and Coupeville led 27-12 heading into the final period.
Lakewood finally came alive in the fourth quarter, using a press to create turnovers and put up 20 points, 12 by Marissa Blair, but the uprising was too late to catch Coupeville, which scored 13 and received five each by Makana Stone and Hammer.
The Wolves could have put the game away sooner but connected on only six of 20 free throws.
Hammer finished with 13 points, Fabrizi 10, Stone six, Bessie Walstad four, Breeanna Messner four, Lauren Escalle three and Jai’Lysa Hoskins two.
Stone led the rebounders with eight; Hammer had two blocks; Fabrizi and Escalle had three steals; and Fabrizi, Messner and Haley Marx had three assists.
King said, “Overall, one of our best games in the young season. We are starting to find a good rotation and getting better at seeing the floor on the offensive end.”
