Arlington used a series of runs to top the visiting Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team 63-42 Friday, Jan. 20.
The Eagles (6-1, 9-6) produced a 5-0 run at the end of the first quarter to take a 17-7 lead, tacked on a 7-0 run in the second quarter to lead 32-18 at halftime and then put the game away with a 15-1 run in the third quarter to go up 49-26.
Arlington did much of its damage from beyond the arc, converting 13 three-pointers. Griffin Gardoski connected on five and Anthony Whitis four to lead the long-range assault.
“I thought it was a much more competitive game than our last few,” Oak Harbor coach John Weston said. “The kids played hard and executed the game plan.”
The plan was to slow down the Eagles’s high-scoring duo of
Drew Bryson and Sam Tregoning.
The pair, who came in averaging 35 combined points, finished with less than 20.
“Haven Brown and JJ Mitchell did a tremendous job on Bryson, (and) Gavin Allen and Adam Nelson played well on Tregoning,” Weston said. “Unfortunately, Gardoski really got hot and picked up the scoring for their main two guys.”
Weston added that the Wildcats were hurt by giving up offensive rebounds and making unforced errors.
The Eagles scored 14 second-chance points and 14 points off turnovers.
“I was really pleased with Joe Arinaza — he sparked us offensively,” Weston said. “Gavin Allen also played well on both sides of the floor.”
Arinaza hit three three-balls to lead Oak Harbor in scoring with 9 points. Brown finished with 7, Allen 6, Mitchell 6, Gabe Salinger 5, Ozell Jackson 5 and Ty Baker 4.
Weston Whitefoot had eight rebounds, two steals and took a charge.
Oak Harbor (0-8, 2-13) goes to Marysville Getchell (1-6, 2-13) at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24.
