Early season crab catches erratic

Depending on who you talk to, crabbing either has been real good or somewhat spotty so far this season.

At Cornet Bay, good catches have been reported and many of the skippers of the boats that docked Saturday afternoon said they had caught their limit — many of them in a very short period of time.

“We were out just about two hours and caught 13 of them,” said Lynden resident Eric Van Beek, who had been out on the water with his father, Ken, and friend Derrick Yancey from Ferndale.

“We even threw a couple of them back,” Ken Van Beek said. “It was pretty good out there today.”

It’s a different story on Dugualla Bay.

“It’s slim pickings out there,” said Dugualla Bay resident Gary Talbert, who had spent part of the morning with his son, Shannon, and grandson, Ryan, trying their luck.

But their determination paid off in the end. “We limited out today,” Shannon said. “I’m amazed what we did today seeing how it’s been.”

Gary Talbert said they had eight pots in the water the first two days this week and caught only eight crab.

“All our neighbors have been doing about zilch,” he said. “They had four pots out and caught five one day and two the next.”

A big problem the Dugualla Bay crabbers are having is people stealing from pots.

“Five pots of our eight-pot string were empty and we knew someone had been into them because they were hooked up different than when we put them in the water,” Talbert said.
