An unsteady defense sent the Coupeville baseball team to a 9-6 loss to Granite Falls Tuesday, April 24, at Robert Sherman Field.

The game was originally scheduled to be at Granite Falls but had to be switched to Coupeville; the Tigers hit as the home team.

The Wolves fell behind 7-1 after five innings, and only one of the runs by the Tigers (7-7, 8-8) was earned as Coupeville committed five errors.

Coupeville’s offense tried to pick up the slack with a five-run sixth to narrow the margin to 7-6. Kurtis Smith reached on an error and Aaron Trumbull doubled to get the rally going. Jake Tumblin singled in both and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk to Drew Chan. Wade Schaef later scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the sixth, Granite Falls’ James Barnard hit a two-run home run to finish off the scoring and the Wolves.

Trumbull finished 2-for-3 with a double, and Tumblin had a stolen base to go along with his two-run single. Tumblin has been successful on all 19 of his stolen base attempts this spring.

Coach Willie Smith said starting pitcher Aaron Curtin threw well but was victimized by the Coupeville errors.

The Wolves (1-10, 3-15) play at 3:30 p.m. at South Whidbey (1-14, 1-16) Thursday, April 26, in a makeup game for Wednesday’s rainout, then finish the regular season with a home nonleague game at 4 p.m. Friday with La Conner (4-8).
