The Coupeville High School baseball team made South Whidbey a little uncomfortable before falling to the Falcons 7-3 Saturday, April 2, in Langley.
South Whidbey (4-4) headed into the final inning with a 7-0 lead, then the Wolves raised the tension level by scoring three times and leaving the bases loaded.
Falcon starter Ricky Muzzy limited Coupeville to two hits and four base runners over the first six innings.
The Wolves broke through against the South Whidbey relievers in the seventh. After an out, Julian Welling reached on an error, Gabe Wynn singled and Clay Reilly walked to load the bases.
Joey Lippo walked to force in one run, then two more runners crossed home plate on singles by Hunter Smith and CJ Smith.
Two ground balls ended the rally.
South Whidbey started the game with three runs in the first inning, mixing three hits with a passed ball and wild pitch.
Muzzy slugged a triple in fourth when the Falcons scored their other four runs.
The Smiths, Welling, Wynn, Reilly and Cole Payne recorded hits for Coupeville.
“South Whidbey is a great team,” Coupeville coach Marc Aparicio said. “We played well.”
The Falcons made “some good defensive plays,” he added, noting many of the Wolves’ best hits were right at defenders.
Coupeville (1-0, 3-6) plays its second of four consecutive road games when it goes to La Conner (3-3) at 4 p.m. Friday, April 8.
