The Oak Harbor High School fastpitch team fell to Lake Stevens Friday, April 9, and Monroe Monday, April 12.
Lake Stevens’ pitcher Launa Blaine fired a no-hitter at the Wildcats in a 6-0 win at Hillcrest Elementary.
The Vikings (1-4, 2-7) scored five of their six runs in the first inning and all were unearned as Oak Harbor committed three infield errors.
After a lead-off walk, a bobbled ball on a bunt enabled both runners to be safe. The next batter flied out, and that was followed by a single to load the bases. An error at third on the next play allowed a run to score. A single drove in another run, but the Wildcats committed their third error of the inning when the outfielder’s throw, which arrived soon enough at third to tag a trail runner out, was dropped.
Not all was lost in the field. In the fourth Emily Meagher’s strong throw to Marissa Fakkema, who relayed the ball to Brittany Johnston at third, nailed a Viking trying to stretch a double into a triple and put an end to a potential Lake Stevens rally.
Host Monroe (2-2, 4-4) scored three in the first and Oak Harbor never threatened in the 10-1 game.
It was another rough day for the Wildcats. Coach Jessica Weikle said her team committed five errors, missed five signals and gave up seven unearned runs.
Oak Harbor scored in the fifth and avoided being 10-runned when Shawna Steele led off with a walk, followed by another walk to Hannah Dolph. Steele took third on a wild pitch, leaving second base open. Dolph stole second on the next pitch.
Kasie Brown lined a single to center, scoring Steele; however, Dolph was out at the plate trying to score without sliding. After an out, Meagher walked, but the rally ended there.
Steele finished 2-for-3 with a walk, run and stolen base. Meagher and Whitney Osborn were each 2-for-3 with a walk.
The pair of losses dropped Oak Harbor’s Wesco record to 0-5 and overall mark to 1-7. The Wildcats host Arlington (0-2, 3-3) today, April 13, at 4 p.m.
