The Coupeville fastpitch team broke a 16-game losing streak by defeating host Sultan 8-4 in the second game of a double header Tuesday, May 11.
The Turks won the first game 8-3.
After defeating Concrete in the season opener, the Wolves couldn’t jump into the win column until Tuesday’s victory. Coach Denny Zylstra said, “The kids were pretty excited.” He hopes the momentum will help them be successful in today’s (Wednesday, May 12) regular season finale with Lakewood at 4 p.m. in Coupeville.
Thursday, May 13, the Wolves start sub-district a home at 4 p.m. with Meridian (2-17) in a loser-out game. The winner will play Saturday at noon at the Janiki Fields in Sedro-Woolley.
In the opening game loss at Sultan, the Wolves were ahead 2-0 before the Turks scored four runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Defensive breakdowns allowed Sultan to score five unearned runs.
Roxy Piechowski was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Grace LaPoint went 2-for-4. Bessie Walstad picked up an RBI.
In the second game, the Coupeville defense tightened up and committed just one error. Its offense was equally as efficient, rapping 11 hits.
The Wolves scored in the first on an error after a LaPoint triple. In the second, LaPoint struck again, this time ripping a two-run double.
Sultan responded by taking a 4-3 lead into the fourth. Coupeville jumped ahead for good with two runs. Piechowski singled, Taylor Lawson singled and Katie Smith singled home Piechowski. Walstad followed with another RBI single.
The Wolves added two in the seventh. Walstad reached on a error, Julie Huddleston walked and Becca Armstrong singled to load the bases. After two outs, Lawson drove two home with a single.
LaPoint finished off a nice day by going 2-for-3 with her double, triple, run and two RBI.
Lawson was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
