Christine Fields, a senior at Coupeville High School, earned her third top-10 finish in four years at the state 1A girls golf tournament at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course Wednesday and Thursday, May 27 and 28.
Fields, who was in fifth place after the first round this year, finished sixth. She was eighth as a freshman, 15th as a sophomore and fifth last year, which was the best finish ever for a Coupeville High School golfer.
She shot an 86 the second round after carding an 83 Wednesday. Her “teammate,” Tarra Moore of South Whidbey High School, fired an 81 Thursday to jump ahead five spots and claim fifth, one stroke better than Fields, 168-169.
Putting was a problem for Fields.
“Both days I had a hard time on the greens,” she said. “I hit the ball the best I have all season, unfortunately my putts were another story. My first round I had five three-putts and a four-putt. The second round was the same story; I would set myself up well up to the green and then not get it done with the putting.”
Lauryn Keating of Elma won the tournament with a 76-73, 149. She was followed by two King’s golfers, Charis Tsai (155) and Hannah Rho (157). Highland’s Lucy Mitchum was fourth, one stroke better than Moore and two better than Fields.
Rosie Portillo of South Whidbey finished seventh to help the Falcons place second in the team standings behind King’s.
Since Fields is Coupevillle’s only golfer, she practiced with South Whidbey during the year and followed the Falcon’s match schedule.
“Although my rounds didn’t go as well as I would have liked, I was extremely proud of the South Whidbey girls team,” Fields said. “The four girls all made the cut to the second day and earned their second place team award; no one deserved it more than them. I’m glad I could have my final state appearance with those girls and coach (Tom) Sage.”
