Footballs are flying around again at Wildcat Memorial Stadium and Mickey Clark Field.
The annual Wildcat Football Camp opened this week and Oak Harbor High School head coach Jay Turner and his staff welcomed 140 players, up from the usual turnout of about 120.
Camp will continue each day at 2:45 p.m. through June 15. No camp is scheduled for Friday, June 10, or the weekends.
June 13 features a combine and June 15 the end-of-camp scrimmage.
Turner said, “Our No. 1 goal is for the kids to have fun and to get excited for the fall. With this we want to get a majority of our offensive, defensive and special teams packages introduced. This way when fall camp starts in August we don’t have to go back and re-teach all of the basics and we can jump right in where we left off in June.”
The spring camp, Turner said, also gives the staff “an idea where the kids are, where our strengths and weaknesses are, what we need to work on during the summer.”
Coupeville High School also began a camp this week and will continue each Monday, Wednesday and Friday through June 17. The Wolves, coached by Jay Silver, will be attending a team camp at Central Washington University June 18 to 21.
