The offensive struggles of the Coupeville girls basketball team continued as it fell to host Cedarcrest 51-24 Tuesday, Dec. 14.
With Katie Smith still out with injury, the Wolves need other players to pick up the offensive slack, said coach Jackie Bykonen.
She said, “A lot of the girls need to step up, and this comes with developing more confidence. They can’t all rely on one person, in last night’s case, Cassidi (Rosenkrance) to score.”
Bykonen liked the effort of Amanda Manker who “had strong post moves…that resulted in easy buckets.”
Cedarcrest (2-0, 3-2) took the first quarter lead 9-5 and steadily padded its lead throughout the contest. The Red Wolves led 21-9 at half and 34-18 at the end of the third quarter.
Bykonen said, “There is potential to beat every team, we just have to minimize the little mental mistakes. Cedarcrest is very beatable. Nothing they did stood out. They got a lot of their points off second shots, which means we need to block out. We will continue to hammer these things in practice every day.”
Rosenkrance paced the Wolves with eight points, Manker finished with seven, Taya Boonstra three, Lauren Escalle two, Bessie Walstad two, Kendra O’Keefe one and Megan Metlow one.
The Wolves (0-2, 1-4) travel to King’s (2-0, 3-2) Friday, Dec. 17, at 5:15 p.m. and then hit the road again Saturday for a nonleague game at University Prep (1-4) at 12:30 p.m.
